Fintech product development

How to build and scale payments and banking products — from mobile apps used by hundreds of thousands of people to the core banking APIs financial institutions run on. Lessons from my product work at Payoneer, Finxact (Fiserv) and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

Five principles for building fintech products

  1. 01

Start from the money movement, not the screen

Fintech products are built on rails — ACH, card, wire, real-time payments and the ledger behind them. Map how funds, balances and statuses actually move before designing any experience, so the product reflects what the infrastructure can guarantee.

  2. 02

Let customer-facing teams define the problem

At Payoneer, support tickets asking for on-the-go account visibility and sales feedback on competitive gaps made the case for a mobile app. Customer Success and Sales data are often the clearest signal of where a fintech product is losing users.

  3. 03

Treat APIs as the product's foundation

Core banking platforms like Finxact serve financial institutions through APIs. Clear contracts, testing processes and B2B UX for operators are what let banks build on top of the platform — and what shorten time-to-market for every product that follows.

  4. 04

Design compliance and risk in from day one

Identity, authentication, payment security and regulatory requirements shape the flow itself. Building them into discovery and requirements avoids late rework and protects user trust.

  5. 05

    Measure outcomes, not output

Success in fintech shows up as adoption, retention, fewer support contacts and revenue — not features shipped. Instrument the product early and tie the roadmap to those numbers.
